Title: How do you attach pictures to forum topic postings ?
Post by: jrdpod on July 25, 2008, 10:59:06 AM
Pardon me for appearing daft, but I can't seem to suss this out.

Other members seem to happily attach pics, such as the fine selection of REs that 'Busman' has just posted.

Advice requested please !

Regards
John Podgorski.

In both cases look for the blue link which says Additional Options

In either case, click on the blue Additional Options link which, you will see, opens the link to the 'attach files' dialogue box - and other sundry delights.

I generally copy my photos to the desktop before clicking on Browse to open the dialogue box (to attach the files) as it makes the navigation of the dialogue box somewhat easier.

I'm using the Firefox browser on an iMac: the dialogue box on other browsers (Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer) and on other operating systems (Windaz, GNU/Linux) will look a little different.

Now, click on the filename of the photo you wish to send and click Open or OK (whichever your dialogue box offers) and you'll see the filepath appear in the Attach field.

I've shown a fictitious example.

And you can see there is also a link to click for (more attachments).

But don't forget to read Suzy's warning about maximum file size per post.

Now - in best Blue Peter fashion - here's one I made earlier...

It's of Stagecoach driver training vehicle 52443 (R543GSF) in Barnwell Road, Cambridge, yesterday.

I hope that helps.

If you exceed the maximum file size, it will not let you attach it - it will come back with an error. If you are attaching a large file, may I suggest copying & pasting your text entry first... as if the server times out and errs to respond, you will still have the text you typed, either on clipboard (CTRL+C for Windows, Pretzel+C for Mac) or paste it into a word processing/notepad app.

If you already have a picture stored on the web somewhere, you can embed it here - but it will embed at full size (unlike attached pictures, which will do a thumbnail automatically and then allow you to click for the full size version). This will not be uploaded to the server, so if you think it is one that might go elsewhere quickly, then you may need to attach it instead.

To post a pic in a message (stored elsewhere)...
1. Click on the second button on the second row. If you hover over it, it should say Insert Image.
2. You will now be given [ IMG ] [ / IMG ] (note that there will be no spaces on the real thing, this is to make it visible. If I removed the spaces... well, it won't be there!)
3. Type or paste the URL of the picture between the square brackets, so it reads, as an example... [ img ] http://suzyscott.com/journal_files/2008_02/HPIM0216.JPG [ /IMG ]
4. Click on Preview to check. If you are satisfied with it, then continue to click Post.

Fotopic users need to do a little more.
1. As an example, go to http://suzyscott.fotopic.net/p52212006.html to see a picture of an Arriva Dart in Baldock. To embed this picture into your Forum post, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and look for Full Size. (If it is not there on your pictures, please refer to Fotopic documentation on how to turn this on).
2. You can either click on it, then copy the URL from the address bar, or (if right clicking is allowed, some Fotopic sites disable this) right-click on Full Size and then Copy Link or similar.
3. You will then have a long string like this... http://images2.fotopic.net/?iid=yu331i&outx=600&noresize=1&nostamp=1
You need to take away the number after images, and everything after the first amphersand i.e. the & symbol.
So, convert  that to http://images.fotopic.net/?iid=yu331i
4. Click on the second button on the second row, Insert Image.
5. Type or paste the short URL of the picture between the square brackets, so it reads, as an example... [ img ] http://images.fotopic.net/?iid=yu331i [ /IMG ]
6. Click on Preview to check. If you are satisfied with it, then continue to click Post.
