I used to be all for trams, based on what I've seen of them in foreign countries (all in E Europe), and what I've read of tram trains in Germany.

I used to think that they were an easy and practical way of making something good that was cheap. Seeing how long a complete refurbishment and relaying of some lines in Tallinn took (not long) strengthened the belief.

I've been in Edinburgh, and have seen how much progress they have made despite trying their level best to shut down the whole of Edinburgh for the last three years, and I'm starting to waiver.

I still think they are a good idea, but not the way we seem to want to do them in this country :(  I think they work better if we let them life alongside trains, and if we say that people should have a modicum of common sense and be expected to try to not get run down.
