When I stay in London, one of my local routes (in Chingford) is the 179. It is quite busy and a good bus route. What I want to know is why it is being cut between Barking and Ilford to run Chingford-Ilford? Reliabillity?

I live quite close to this route. I believe they are cutting it back for reliability reasons, the section between Barking and Ilford can get gridlocked very often.

As far as I know, the 369 is also being withdrawn between the same points, and replaced by the TG1 (Thames Gateway project). This may well explain why the 179 is being cut back too.

Yes the 369 is being withdrawn for the TG1, which will be operated by Blue Triangle. This is probably another reason the 179 is being withdrawn between Ilford and Barking
