East Coast launches 50% discount on off-peak travel
By A. Samuel · June 3, 2011 · Train Operating Companies

Passengers taking advantage of the new half price Super Off-Peak Single tickets, can use them to travel during off-peak hours on Monday to Friday, and on any train at weekends.

Train operator East Coast has introduced a new 50% discount on its Super Off-Peak Standard Class Single tickets to allow ‘leisure passengers even more flexibility’ when booking their travel.

The offer which is available to book from Thursday 2 June until Saturday 16 July via the website only,  for travel until Friday 7 October inclusive, allows passengers ‘even more freedom to tailor the appropriate ticket type to each leg of their journey’.

Passengers taking advantage of the new half price Super Off-Peak Single tickets, can use them to travel during off-peak hours on Monday to Friday, and on any train at weekends.

The tickets can be bought as singles, or used in conjunction with another single fare, such as an Advance Purchase ticket, to make up a return journey.

East Coast Commercial Director Peter Williams said:

“This 50% discount on the Super Off-Peak Single tickets offers excellent value for money and is a great way for our passengers to add flexibility to their journey by allowing them to travel on any train at weekends and in off-peak hours during the week.

“As well as the flexibility offered when using this ticket, travel is also permitted with other train operators, on the route shown on your ticket.

“Passengers can even get further discounts on the Super Off-Peak Single by using their Railcard, which offers an extra discount off the already discounted price, so this offer is one not to be missed.”

The discounted Super Off-Peak Single tickets are subject to availability on key routes in and out of London from selected destinations on the East Coast Main Line.

Peter Williams added: “The new offer comes a little over a week after East Coast launched a new timetable which will provide 117 extra services per week, more than three million additional seats per year, faster journeys, as well as making major improvements to its First Class on-board service.”

“This includes a complimentary food and drink service and a quiet coach for customers travelling in First Class.”

Guy Dangerfield from Passenger Focus, said:

“We have long-advocated that an Off-Peak single ticket is half the price of the equivalent return and East Coast is introducing this as an online trial, initially for tickets to and from London.

“It’s good news for passengers because it allows people to buy a train-specific Advance ticket in one direction, but have flexibility coming back at a much more reasonable price.”

The time restrictions when using the Super Off-Peak Single tickets apply to any train travelling Southbound timed to arrive into London King’s Cross at 11.17 or later on Monday to Friday.

For Northbound services, the Super Off-Peak Single tickets can be used on any train from London King’s Cross except those timed to depart before 09.06 on Monday to Friday, and 14.57 to 18.59 inclusive on Monday to Thursday, and 14.57 to 18.15 on Fridays.

There are no off-peak time restrictions on weekends allowing passengers flexibility to travel on any train service.
