1. May 2011 timetable – what’s happening
The First Capital Connect May timetable comes into effect on Sunday 22 May 2011. The following
changes will be made to weekday and weekend services:
Great Northern route changes (Mondays to Fridays)
 01:36 King’s Cross to Peterborough
Service to call additionally at New Southgate
 09:12 Moorgate to Hertford North
Service extended to Letchworth Garden City (vice ECS)
 09:59 King’s Lynn to King’s Cross
Calls additionally at Royston and Letchworth Garden City.
Strengthened to 8 coaches between Cambridge and King’s Cross
 15:40 King’s Cross to Welwyn Garden City
Service re-instated, calling at Finsbury Park, New Southgate, Oakleigh Park, Potters Bar and
Hatfield
 15:45 King’s Cross to King’s Lynn
To start at 15.44 and call additionally at Letchworth Garden City and Royston.
Strengthened to 8 coaches between King’s Cross and Cambridge.
 16:02 Ely to Cambridge and 16.24 Cambridge to King’s Cross
Services combined as a 16.06 Ely to King’s Cross
 16:24 Cambridge to Ely
Re-timed to 16.15 and extended to Downham Market, calling at Littleport.
 16:54 King’s Lynn to King’s Cross
Service starts from Ely at 17.24
 16:57 King’s Cross to Welwyn Garden City
Strengthened to 8 cars. New Barnet call substituted for Hadley Wood call.
 17:24 Cambridge to King’s Cross
Service to start back from King’s Lynn at 16.35
Other Great Northern route service changes (Saturday)

Royston stop withdrawn due to low patronage (alternative 8 car service at 17.52)

Weekend Engineering Work
Regular engineering work will be taking place on the Great Northern Route at weekends, causing
planned disruption to First Capital Connect services. During the May 2011 timetable, period blocks
will take place from Saturday 25 June through to Sunday 4 December 2011. These are detailed
below, however will be subject to change closer to the time of operation.
Period F Block: Saturday 25 June – Sunday 31 July
Engineering work will be taking place in the Stevenage area from approximately 20:30 on Saturdays
until 13:30 on Sundays, and in the Letchworth area from 01:30 until 13:30 on Sundays. During these
times, services on all Great Northern routes will be affected, with a revised timetable in operation.
Only a limited number of First Capital Connect services will be able to operate through Stevenage
whilst these works are taking place.
On the Peterborough route, services on Saturdays out of London will be running through with
reduced numbers of services and extended journey times until 23:00. During this time, services from
Peterborough towards London will not be able to call at Hitchin, replacement bus services will
operate between Arlesey and Hitchin and Hitchin and Stevenage for passengers to/from Hitchin.
From 23:00 a normal service will operate from London towards Peterborough, however the last
service from Peterborough to London will be replaced by a connecting bus between Hitchin and
Welwyn Garden City. On Sundays, a reduced service with extended journey times will operate
to/from Peterborough until 13:30.
On the Cambridge and King’s Lynn route on Saturdays, from 20:30 until 23:00 trains towards
Cambridge and King’s Lynn will start at Hitchin, connecting out of the services towards
Peterborough. From 23:00 a normal service will operate from London towards Cambridge and
King’s Lynn. From 20@30, all services from King’s Lynn and Cambridge towards London will
terminate at Hitchin. On Sundays until 13:30, services to/from Cambridge will terminate and start at
Baldock, non-stop replacement bus services will operate between Stevenage and Royston, and allstations
between Baldock and Stevenage or Hitchin. Passengers for stations between Stevenage
and London are advised to change at Royston. Until 13:30, services to and from King’s Lynn will
start and terminate at Cambridge, passengers for London are advised to travel on National Express
East Anglia services from Cambridge.
On the Welwyn Garden City route, from 20:00 there will be a reduced number of faster services to
Potters Bar, Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City, and replacement bus services will operate between
Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage, calling at Welwyn North and Knebworth. On Sundays until
13:00 an amended timetable will be in operation, with buses replacing trains at Welwyn North and
Knebworth until 11:00.
On the Hertford North route, from 20:30 until 23:30 Saturdays and from 08:00 until 10:00 Sundays
the all-stations service to Stevenage will terminate at Hertford North, with replacement bus services
to Watton-at-Stone and Stevenage. Certain trains will also omit calls at intermediate stations
between Finsbury Park and Hertford North.
Period G Block: Sunday 7 August – Sunday 11 September
Engineering work will be taking place at Finsbury Park, and between Alexandra Palace and Cuffley,
from 01:30 on Sundays until 04:00 on Mondays.
All services departing from London King’s Cross on Sundays will be affected, with departure times
up to five minutes earlier than normal and earlier departure times from Finsbury Park. A reduced
number of services to and from Harringay, Hornsey and Alexandra Palace will operate.
On the Hertford North route, replacement bus services will operate between Alexandra Palace and
Cuffley, connecting at Alexandra Palace into and out of the all-stations services to and from Welwyn
Garden City. Between Cuffley and Stevenage, a revised timetable will be in operation, connecting
out of the bus service at Cuffley.

Period H Block: Sunday 18 September – Sunday 23 October
Engineering work will be taking place at Finsbury Park, and between Gordon Hill and Stevenage,
from 01:30 on Sundays until 04:00 on Mondays. Engineering work will also affect services between
Hitchin and Peterborough from 01:15 until 07:45 on Sundays.
Stopping services from London King’s Cross towards Welwyn Garden City will depart London King’s
Cross up to three minutes earlier than normal.
Stopping services towards Hertford North will terminate at Gordon Hill, with replacement bus
services to Hertford North and Stevenage.
Engineering work will take place between Peterborough and Hitchin from approximately 01:15 until
approximately 07:55 on Sundays. Train services to and from Peterborough will be diverted to start
and terminate at Letchworth Garden City. A replacement bus service will run between Letchworth
Garden City and Peterborough calling at all stations between Arlesey and Peterborough. This will
affect the last two service to Peterborough (00:23 SuO and 00:53 SuO) on Saturday night. The first
through train service will be the 07:45 from Peterborough to King’s Cross. The first through train
service will be the 07:46 from Peterborough to London King’s Cross.
Period J Block: Sunday 30 October – Sunday 4 December
Engineering work will affect services between Hitchin and Peterborough from 01:15 until 07:45 on
Sundays.
Engineering work will take place between Peterborough and Hitchin from approximately 01:15 until
approximately 07:55 on Sundays. Train services to and from Peterborough will be diverted to start
and terminate at Letchworth Garden City. A replacement bus service will run between Letchworth
Garden City and Peterborough calling at all stations between Arlesey and Peterborough. This will
affect the last two service to Peterborough (00:23 SuO and 00:53 SuO) on Saturday night. The first
through train service will be the 07:45 from Peterborough to King’s Cross. The first through train
service will be the 07:46 from Peterborough to London King’s Cross.
2. Important customer messages
Key messages to communicate with customers are:
 A new timetable will come into operation on Sunday 22 May 2011.
 There will be enhancements to weekday services north of Cambridge.
 Engineering work will affect services on the Great Northern route at weekends. Please check for
details before travelling.
 Details of the new timetable are available in the timetable booklets, which are now available at
stations and on the First Capital Connect website.
 Commuter cards, detailing the Monday to Friday services between specific First Capital Connect
stations and Central London, are also available for major stations on the Great Northern route.
This includes Cambridge, Hertford North, Hitchin, Huntingdon, King’s Lynn, Letchworth Garden
City, Peterborough, Potters Bar, Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City.
3. How we’re keeping customers informed
All customers are advised to check the new timetable to see if and how their journey has been
affected. Various measures have been taken to ensure that customers are aware of the changes
taking place in May. These include:
 Posters at stations alerting customers to the upcoming timetable change and advising where to
find details of these alterations.
 Detailing the changes to the service on the First Capital Connect website.
 Making announcements at stations and on trains and displaying messages on customer
information screens in the week prior to the timetable changes.
 Sending an email alert to all customers on the First Capital Connect database.
 Consultation of all relevant stakeholders and rail user groups
