Council's £3m towards bus station

Greyfriars Bus Station was opened in 1976

Plans to spend £3m towards the cost of a new bus station in Northampton have been approved by Northampton Borough Council.

The cabinet unanimously agreed the funding at a meeting on Wednesday.

The cash would add to the £8m already earmarked for the project by the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC).

The scheme would see the station at Grayfriars demolished and a new station built on the Fishmarket.

Councillor David Mackintosh, leader of the council, said the spend was necessary, and that a new bus interchange was vital for plans to expand the Grosvenor Centre.

"The only guarantee we can give is that if it doesn't go ahead the Grosvener centre will not happen," he said.

Legal & General which owns the The Grosvenor Centre has now appointed a team to work on the project. A plan is due to go on display to the public in the spring.

Mr Mackintosh added: "There will be a central hub which will be indoors and the buses will be outdoors and that's where the vast majority of departures will go from.

"The plan that we have in mind will also have a cafe, a shop provision, although we can't say yet what kind of shop will be going there, public toilets and seating as well."

I understand that this proposed new Bus Station will have significantly fewer bays than the present one and a number of routes will have to be moved out to stands in the street.  This is surely a step backwards.

Let's just ensure it gets knocked down asap - at least then we won't have one of the worst dumps in the UK to put up with.

Hemce why a number of Stagecoach routes, like the 5 and the 8 now run through the Town Centre, Stagecoach stopped doing this a few years ago when the 1/51 got merged into the 1, 15A, 15B etc.
