Unusual for a Saturday, all 3 remaining Volvo Citybuses were out in service today, plus both Dennis Lances.

I'm guessing here, as it's been a long time since I travelled on one, but have the Citybuses ever been refurbished as from the outside it seemes the seats still have their now very faded original moquette.

The ride quality on them always seemed superior compared to Olympians, and most had individual seats, which at the time was not the norm.

Be nice if one was preserved, due to their long service history.

It's probably been even longer since I travelled on a Citybus, so can't comment on your refurb query. I would personally always rate Olympians superior to Citybuses EXCEPT for the East Lancs bodied ones that Northampton Corporation had (fleetnumbers 77-82 from memory), and they were absolutely dire to ride on. More uncomfortable than any fairground ride !

Finally, yes I suppose it would be good to see a Citybus preserved as they have been part of the local scenery for almost 25 years now.

Passenger 933

If one of the Citybuses was to be preserved, it might be a good idea to nominate 38098 as the one.

This would get it out of the deplorable state it is now in due to neglect (or dis-interest?) by it's present owners WIRST !!!

even more unusual, 38121 was on the late duty on the 4, very rare indeed.

i travelled home on the "Wreck" (38098) earlier.

Re the "wreck" (38098) when it passed my house this morning I feel sure it has now been fitted with the advert "framing" on the side panels, this suggests it is Wirst's intention to keep it in service although nothing has been done to improve it's apalling appearance.

How much longer will this disreputable vehicle be running the streets of Northampton?

The "wreck" has just passed my house on it's usual afternoon school run (remember First haven't got any school contracts according to their staff) and it has indeed had avert framing fitted at least on the nearside (I haven't been able to check the offside).

Why fit this framing when the best thing would have been to crank up the acetylene torch !!!

I can't imagine it will be long before First announces Northampton as up for sale.

The question is, who would want to buy it? Fleet isn't exactly worth much and would need replacing along with the depot, all a buyer would be paying for is the routes, and there's nothing preventing them from just registering identical services tomorrow if they so wished.

You are correct Dennis, both 38098 & 38121 have nearside Advert frames fitted :)

That was quick, it passed me coming off the M1 at Jctn 16 about 11.

Are you sure its a transfer, not a loan?

If 32065 IS a transfer to Northampton, what is it replacing as I don't think the PVR has increased.

Certainly not the "wreck" 38098 which was seen yesterday operating the Guilsborough school contract.

At twelve years old, 32065 is approaching the right age profile for transfer to poor old Northampton as has always been the case with Wirst.

A pity they couldnt find a clapped out Olympian instead, I'm hoping that the B7 'Deckers are moved out soon prior to close down.

Does anyone know if 32065 is a permanent transfer to Northampton as for the last two days it has operated the afternoon Guilsborough school contract. ;D ;D ;D

32065 is still at Northampton but I am wondering if any more of the same batch are here also as this morning I saw what looked like two identical deckers (as 32065) leaving the bus station together but too far away to see their identities.

One of them was definitely not 122 as that was parked up in the bus station.

B7L 32629 is still with us working the Guilsborough school contract this morning but I have not seen 32630 lately

32630 is still here - saw it last Friday in the bus station. 32065 still has Leicester legal lettering, so maybe won't be staying? On the subject of the ex-Norwich Scania/Wrights, the ones I've ridden on all run well and seem OK engine-wise with little or no exhaust smoke, but the state of them from the outside is nothing short of an embarrassment. This is what the Northampton public sees of course. To think that First were running these in Norwich, one of England's most beautiful cities, is surely proof if it were ever needed that there is a terrible sickness running through First's management from top to bottom. Tim O'Toole has to act fast and savagely to weed these people out if First is not to implode like Railtrack did. Give local managers freedom to use their local knowledge to run bus services, not accountants in far-off places. I've known this company's operations since 1963, and to see it go from Northampton Corporation Transport, the smartest (buses brush-painted and varnished) and most profitable council-owned bus company in Britain to the shambles that it is now is just so sad and unnecessary. I feel so sorry for their long-serving drivers who try to put a brave face on it, but they (and most of the more-recent ones) look so fed up. Best wishes to you.

Regrettably, First Bus in the UK has gone too far downhill to be saved (IMHO) - by Tim O'Toole or Giles Fearnley. Northampton is only one (good) example but you could add virtually any of their operations in the UK. I consider only West Yorkshire and Manchester are worth keeping.

Noted in service today was a Plaxton Dennis Lance. I did not realise any were left!

There are two Plaxton Verde-bodied Dennis Lances (Cummins C-series/ZF Ecomat driveline) left, one L- and one M-reg. They are old, not lowfloor but the tidiest externally of all the single-deckers and in many ways look just as modern as the Wright bodies. Useful motors.

The M registered Dennis Lance was a back up vehicle for the 'NSG' contract because it had seat belts.
