First Northampton de-registers most routes
« on: April 18, 2013, 01:37:47 PM »
.
.
First Northampton has de-registered their routes 12, 23, 28 and 29/30, all wef 9th June 2013. They have also registered timetable changes (*presumably* reduced frequencies) to the 2 and 4A routes. As far as I can see that just leaves the 4 untouched.

Interestingly, Stagecoach has also now de-registered their (recently registered and competitive) Kingsthorpe route 3 - but has registered a 'variation' to their own existing route 4.......of which I can't find any trace !........and their 16/17.

These changes have only appeared this morning, so something else may yet appear later to better explain what is going on.

First Northampton left just running the 4, plus the 4A and 2 to revised timetables, sounds like a truly slimmed down operation !!

Lets hope there is a further 'slimdown' - to Zero before the end of the year!

What's the point anymore? They may as well just close up shop and leave Northampton for good.

What's the betting the three remaining Citybuses survive this latest cull?  :P

OK let's keep 38121 as it is in original condition (apart from livery) and repaint it into it's original NT livery.

No use keeping 38122 as it does not have it's original body and 38098 is best consigned to the scrap yard.

Dale, regarding Stagecoach's service 4 registration, this covers the very first Monday-Friday morning journey at 0609 from Chalcombe Avenue into Northampton.

Northants County Council website shows that effective 9th June services 16 and 17 are going to be extended acroos town to run Ecton Brook-Town Centre-Kingsthorpe (Holly Lodge Drive) on a 10 minute frequency Mon-Sat daytimes, every 20 minutes on Sun daytimes and every 30 minutes evenings every day of the week. Rejoice and Halellujah, at last the Obelisk Rise Estate is getting the level of service it deserves.

Thanks, I was just about to post a similar comment about the early morning 4. Presumably, they're just going to enhance that to a frequent service so that there's no need for their new route 3 over the same territory.

Not sure why First aren't just throwing in the towel - perhaps there's some legal nicety they can use to reduce/avoid costs somewhere ?

One imagines that Wirst would like to sell up. However...

If they try to sell to SiN, the Competition Commision will block the sale; if they offer a set of declining routes and old vehicles to independents, there aren't going to be too many potential takers wanting to do battle with SiN.

The competition law of unintended consequences:
  • selling an ailing business to a competitor – BAD
  • protecting the employees of an ailing business through transfer to a competitor – BAD
  • letting an ailing business sink into terminal decline, so your competitor picks up the business free – GOOD
  • issuing the employees of an ailing business redundancy notices, as it sinks into terminal decline – GOOD
TCD813? The reg of a Southdown Motor Services, Northern Counties bodied, Leyland Titan PD3/4 FH39/30F (popularly dubbed 'Queen Mary') from the late 50s.

I think First realised some time ago that they weren't going to get any serious offers for the Northampton business. Few other operators, of any size, would relish having Stagecoach there and, for the same reason, there would be limited potential for any newcomer to grow the existing First operations.

Stagecoach know only too well that the OFT/CC would block them from buying First in Northampton so, as we'd all rather expected, they've just had to sit back and wait. As with North Devon, they should now get it all for free, and without any added issues involving staff and/or clapped out buses.

Stagecoach has, today, registered a new service 15 between Northampton and Acre Lane wef 2/9/13 - presumably to compete with First's 4A.

Thank you for the good news, don't know why they don't give up altogether and let Stagecoach rule the roost everywhere, at least they know how to run and improve services they take over as they have already done in Northampton !!!

I noticed on a Facebook comment for a driver, albeit not a Northampton one, that as of September First is ceasing operations in Northampton.

Stagecoach are registering route 15 between Town Centre and Acre Lane, and I wonder how long for the registration is amended to be Rectory Farm / Blackthorn - Lumbertubs - Kettering Road - Town - Acre Lane.

For reasons best known to them (and totally baffling to everyone else) First appear to be plodding on with their 2 and 4A, albeit they will no longer run on Sundays after 11/8/13.

Crazy.

Confirmed in the PSV trade press this week that First are pulling out of Northampton in September and that discussions have started with staff over their futures.

I hyave been asked by a number of people about the end of First's services in Northampton but have been unable to answer these questions.

Whilst we know First are to leave Northampton (Hooray !!!) at the end of September, does anyone yet know when First will operate their final service journeys on what is left of their routes?

Dennis,

I don't think VOSA has yet recorded any de-registration of the 2 or 4A by First Northampton, so we won't have a definite date until that is available. I'm going for 30th September, only because that's when Stagecoach has registered over the 2 - and it's also about 90 days since it was reported that redundancy notices were issued.

If indeed it is 30/9/13 then a de-registration of the last 2 routes may not show up until early August.

Although I've still not seen the necessary cancellations in N & P, the Northants County Council website now shows the final First Northampton routes (2 and 4A) finishing on Saturday 14th September 2013.

I've just found this on the First website :-

http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/northampton/travel_news/news_initiatives/?item=12381&conf=0

It states that route 4A is to cease running after tomorrow (Sat 10th August). The Sunday service has already finished, but the Mon - Sat service was not due to stop until 15th September. Unless Stagecoach step in with an emergency service to cover this, the Welford Rd & Acre Lane areas will have no bus service until 2nd September, when Stagecoach service 15 is due to start (other than Centrebus service 60 which runs about every 2 hours up Welford Rd to Guilsborough/Welford).

Judging from Twitter they are experiencing staffing issues.  Whether this is the cause of the early termination?

I think that this is yet another example of First's total disinterest in Northampton.  Somebody in Leicester, or wherever First administers the Northampton website from, has incorrectly shown the 4A as ceasing from tomorrow when it is in fact the 4 that finishes.

I assume this is just the usual First approach to accuracy - it's the 4 that's shown on VOSA as finishing tomorrow - indeed the First Northampton website also confirms that the 4A continues (see forthcoming timetable).
