passenger933   -   now that's a good question about which Cummins engine would be used as and when the MAN unit in a 39-series 14.240 needs replacing. Although the position of the engine in the chassis is different compared with the 22-series 18.240, it is the same engine in both. With the 39s being shorter, narrower and lighter than the 22s, I would think the 4-cylinder Cummins would be adequate power-wise, and cheaper too. Time will tell!

There are two Darts still at work in Northampton: 34585 and 34589. Both are now listed as being in the reserve fleet, although these  things often change. Both have been repainted and look immaculate. On the subject of the Dennis Dart, it has to be remembered that the 36- and 37-series Stagecoach Enviro 20D have what can only be described as an updated Dart chassis, to the extent that the manufacturer's plate inside the door of the bus states 'Dart 4'. The biggest difference between previous ALX200- and Pointer-bodied Darts and the 36/37s is that the latter have Voith gearboxes instead of Allison, which personally I regret. I thought the Allison gearbox was the perfect automatic box for the stop/start work that urban buses do. The older AT545 that was fitted to 32- and 33-series Darts was apt to change up through all the gears too soon, which resulted in loss of pulling power unless you used the gear hold facility, but the more modern box on the 34- and 35-series is a dream. Apparently the change to Voith is all to do with better fuel consumption, but it's a safe bet that the Voith is a lot more expensive that the Allison, and it's probably heavier too. From a driver's point of view, I thought the 35-series (56-reg) Pointer Darts are about as good as an urban bus gets. The reason the Dart was so successful is that it is such a no-nonsense bus, respected by both drivers and engineers. It is reliable, has plenty of go and the power is there instantly but smoothly, which makes that vital difference when accelerating out onto a busy roundabout. It's no fun doing that with any modern bus with a Voith gearbox. There is always a delay, which can be infuriating to say the least, and then there is all the surging from the built-in retarder when you're trying to get a nice smooth stop. Progress, eh?

Stagecoach Northampton's MAN 18.240 22835 has returned from Smiles Engineering in Newcastle fitted with a Cummins B-series 6-cylinder engine to replace its damaged MAN unit. It thus has the same engine and gearbox (four-speed Voith) as the Dennis-chassied Enviro 300, and sounds almost, but not quite, the same. Meanwhile 22833, another of the same batch with a ruined MAN engine, was taken on suspended tow by Cowans to Newcastle, presumably for the same treatment. No doubt this will become the norm as MAN units need replacing.

Dart 34592 was working on the 17 in Northampton yesterday. As with 34589, it has been de-branded and given a repaint. According to the latest fleetcard, 34592 is now allocated to Rugby.

Does anyone know where the two Tridents 17037/60 are to be allocated ?

According to the latest fleetcard they are both destined for Kettering. 17037 has now emerged from the paintshop, looking immaculate, for the moment at least, and has been working from Kettering on the 39 for the last 3 days. Not sure what they are replacing, but 16683 (L-reg Olympian) is still in service (was on 39 today). A couple of Kettering's other Olympians have gone to reserve recently (16167 & 16695), so maybe it is to replace them.

Some of Northampton's Scania E300 saloons have received branding for service 2.

3 out of the 4 remaining Northampton Olympians were in service today - 16694/6 & 8. I travelled on '98 & '96 to town & back on the 38. 16696 seems to be the best one of these and still rides well. Haven't seen much of 16699 lately, am I right in thinking it's not a very reliable machine these days ?

Both 17037/60 are now at Kettering, but 17060 wont be entering service just yet, as it requires major engine work.

16167 has been withdrawn after blowing its engine and has donated parts to 16692,  16683 and 16459 are also to be withdrawn soon, both are suffring chassis corrosion.
As soon as it is known when these two are to be withdrawn (particually 16683) it has been arranged that both will hopefully be available to spend the final Saturday in service on the 39, as soon as i get the word i will post the details here

16695 has recently moved to Corby. whilst 16699 is curently VOR at Northampton.

 Scania's 28625-8 have recieved Route 2 Branding

Bad News i am afraid, the planned "Last Saturday" for 16683 will now not happen, as it was Withdrawn at Kettering this afternoon  after operating on the 23/24's between Oundle & Peterborough.
However it, has been placed in Reserve and is to move to Stratford for further service, how long for though is anybodies guess :(

16459 should last until 17060 is ready, which is not expected to be for at least a couple of weeks yet, as it requires a new Engine, i shall ask tomorrow when it is expected to be ready,  until then 16113, 16174 & 16459 should all remain active

Attached is the final picture i took of 16683, as she passed through Walgrave on the 39 on Good Friday

The inaugural Friends Life Women's Cycle Tour crossed the route of service X47 between Great Doddington and Earls Barton today.

'Non Gold' ADL Enviro400 bodied Scania N230UD15449 (MX08 GHU), working the 1144 service from Thrapston to Northampton, passed through just before the road was closed to allow the race to speed across.

'Gold' 15936 (YN63 BYB) passed through about 20 minutes before that working the 1220 service from Northampton to Thrapston).

Trident 18101 was back on its old haunt, the X4, today

Also seen today was an X4 Gold Scania being recovered near Earls Barton.

No doubt the two events are connected.

Northampton's Volvo Olympian/Alexander RL 16696 has received a rear-end repaint. This is quite surprising as I thought the remaining Olympians were due to go from Northampton at the end of the school term. Maybe 16696 will be transferred elsewhere, as it seems to be a fairly reliable machine ?

Kettering appear to have stopped using their Olympians on the 38/39 services - I haven't seen one in over a week now.

If I understand things correctly, all the Olympians and the oldest Tridents (Fleet nos. 17xxx) are not DDA compliant, so will need to be replaced by a date in 2015, assuming they last that long. With what and when is another matter though!

DDA deadline for double decks is January 2017.  However, certain 'closed door' contracts are not covered by DDA, so some could conceivably remain beyond then in any fleet with such work.
