Stagecoach rail franchise community partnership projects shortlisted in 11 community awards

23/08/2011

Recognition for community initiatives in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Dorset and Hampshire
    Successful partnership schemes also recognised
East Midlands Trains’ employee shortlisted for Outstanding Railway Staff Contribution

Stagecoach has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to community rail with its East Midlands Trains and South West Trains franchises reaching the shortlist in 11 categories at this year’s Community Rail Awards.

Schemes delivered in partnership with East Midlands Trains have been shortlisted for a total of seven awards, the majority of which recognise the community partnerships in place along the North Staffordshire Line (from Derby to Crewe). In addition, marketing publications to promote the North Staffordshire Line and Derwent Valley Line, produced in partnership with East Midlands Trains, will battle it out in the category for best marketing publication.

Recognising some of the important work carried out by the East Midlands Trains’ team, Helen Gatensbury from Kidsgrove station has been shortlisted for Outstanding Railway Staff Contribution and the Station Adoption Group at Kidsgrove has also reached the shortlist for their significant improvement work at the station, all done on a voluntary basis.

Station Adoption Groups across the South West Trains' network have had similar success, with the Friends of Upwey Station and Swaythling Station Adoption Group both reaching the shortlist of awards. Joint improvement schemes carried out with Network Rail and local authorities at Farnborough and Pokesdown stations are also in the running at this year’s awards.

The Community Rail Awards is an annual awards event run by ACoRP (the Association of Community Rail Partnerships). They were set up in 2005 so that the unsung heroes and heroines of the community rail world would have their hard work and dedication publicly recognised and rewarded. This year’s awards will be held in Sheffield on 23 September.

Steven Stewart, Stagecoach Group Director of Communications, said: "It’s great news that the community initiatives in place at our rail companies have been recognised in this way. Our train services play a key role in connecting communities and we fully support the work being carried out to improve our train services and stations in partnership with local people and organisations.

"Every year, Stagecoach and its employees also provide hundreds of thousands of pounds of financial support and give of their time to help a wide range of local community projects, as well as local, national and international charities."

Virgin Trains, in which Stagecoach has a 49% holding, has also been shortlisted for Best Community Art Scheme.
