That's a major problem going to some web sites.  Usually the web site being accessed is one of those "under-the-counter" "plain-brown-wrapper" types - best left well alone.

Yes Jamie, What have you been looking at? ;)

On a serious note however, viruses like this only tend to come from questionable websites/spam emails which people open, although some normal sites can be infected but this is like 1 in a million chance!

I would suggest that you get one of the better known Virus programmes.  I use AVG and have found it works - for me that is.  Also a good email scanner is recommended.

Surely, Jamie, you have a decent antivirus program installed? AVG, which I have used for years, and Avast are both very good free ones, and they scan emails. Also, you need an anti spyware program. There are several free ones such as A squared free and Super Antispyware free. Collectively, these should stop problems like the one you have experienced. Also, use a decent firewall - the Windows free one is useless. Zone Alarm is free and very effective, though you may have to turn off the email protection if it clashes with the antivirus email scanner.

Can 2nd 3rd the recommendation of AVG - V8 seems to have a higher level of protection.
Also suggest using Spybot and Lavasoft Ad-Aware for removing spyware and CCleaner to generally keep all your temp files cleaned up

delsons - XP SP2/3 Firewall is much better than the stock one with XP - I've never had any issues with it anyway!

Sam, Spybot and Ad-Aware were pioneers, but are not so good now as some of the other anti spyware programs. Another good free one is Spyware Doctor.

Also, Windows Firewall only acts on incoming traffic, and can be disabled by hackers. I wouldn't trust it for a moment.

CCleaner is very good, and has a totally safe registry cleaner, too.

The most important thing with these programmes is they must be kept up to date. They are useless if they are not kept up to date.

I now use both SUPERAntiSpyware free and ASquared free, as they each employ a different system for detecting spyware. I update them weekly, or before I run a check. I run each of them alternately once a fortnight - so, collectively, I check weekly. Antivirus programs should be updated daily. AVG gives a daily prompt.

I use Norton Anti Virus and Cloudmark. Both very effective and automatically updated on line. Not free though.

Hello,

I use AVG (the latest version is superb), and the latest version of Comodo Firewall.
I also have Spybot S&D, Spyware Terminator, and Spyware Doctor all installed, just in case.

I know that Delsons and I both use Opera as our main browser, this browser is inherently safer than any other browser for Windows on the market, that includes the latest Release candidate for Firefox too. If you're not already doing so Jamie, I would strongly suggest using a different browser than Internet Explorer.

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

Hello Roger,
The latest beta release of Opera 9.5 is stunning in my opinion :).

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

Back on the subject of internet browsers, an article in the Technology section of the Guardian today raves about version 3 of Firefox, and, just below it, is a letter saying Firefox version 3 is total c***! You pays your money......

I shall stick with Opera. I am not too keen on the black/grey panels of the new version 9.50, but that is a small drawback to this excellent browser.

I would recommend saving photographs to a CD immediately after downloading from a digital camera / memory stick.

It's a good idea to perhaps have a second, back-up CD in case one is damaged accidentally later on.

Even in the year 2008, technology has its limits and is not fail-safe  :-\

Hello Roger,

If you go to Tools - Appearance - Windows Native, you'll be taken back to an appearance something more akin to earlier versions of Opera.
The latest incarnation of Firefox was also released with a fairly major security flaw, which was known about in advance...

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

EDIT:- Typonese

....although I am using a slightly older, non-beta version of Opera, but I have found before that Macintosh and Windows versions of browsers can differ quite a bit sometimes!
