Whippet Busway crash
« on: July 14, 2017, 05:41:00 PM »
Forum members in the Cambridge area will be aware of this latest busway incident. Others, living further away, may not.

The accident, involving a southbound Whippet Universal service, occurred at 15:48 on 21 June 2017, on the southern busway, at the point where vehicles enter the guideway having passed under the Hills Road bridge.

There is a 15mph speed restriction at this point, as buses share the roadway with cyclists. Southbound cyclists are required to cut across the the path of both N & S bound buses to reach the cycling and walking path.

There has been a mix of accurate reporting, speculation and other inaccuracies.

Cambridge News:

In the video, City Councillor Zoë O'Connell (LibDem) appears to be measuring the speed of buses as they either accelerate having entered the guideway, or decelerate as they are about to leave it. Her readings were challenged by Stagecoach East's Andy Campbell and Whippet's Charlie Hamilton.

Whippet's MD, Charlie Hamilton, was on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire's s Dotty McLeod breakfast show, on 11 July 2017, together with Cambridgeshire County Council's Menzies Campbell. Fast-forward to 2h 7m to hear the interviews and also a recap of city councillor Zoë O'Connell's speed investigations.
