Reading station improvements

What's happening?

Improvement works are currently underway at Reading that will result in a modernised station with increased capacity to meet growing customer demand. This major remodelling at one of First Great Western’s busiest stations is one of the most significant railway upgrade schemes currently being undertaken anywhere in the country.

As part of the ongoing remodelling of Reading station a new platform is being built over the Christmas period and several other platforms are being re-numbered. Although most trains will be using the same platforms as they are now, albeit with new platform numbers, some train services will be using different platforms.

Customers who are familiar with the current platform numbers will need to check notices, posters or ask a member of staff to ensure they are on the correct platform for their destination.

When will this be happening?

The work will take place during the Christmas period to minimise impact on customer journeys, the new platform numbers will be in use from start of service on 27 December 2011.

Here’s a summary of the key stages leading up to the new platform opening:

27 December 2011 (From approximately 1400 hours) - The new Platform 7 (existing Platform 4) will be operational.
28 December 2011 - The new Platform 10 (existing Platform 9) will be operational
31 December 2011 - The new Platform 4 (new platform) will be operational
31 December 2011 - The new Platform 5 (existing Platform 4b) will cease to be in use. Train services which currently use Platform 4b will use Platform 6
27-30 December 2011 inclusive - Buses replace trains between Reading and Wokingham (this is due to work taking place on the new Platform 4).

CrossCountry services that used to depart from Platform 7 are now leaving from Platform 3. Customers are still advised to please check the departure boards carefully for any platform alterations.
